Veltheimia bracteata
Hyacinthaceae
January-March
this 'red-hot-poker' was very populair during the seventies of the 20th century and was described in all in those days published books about potplants. Nowadays the plant is not that popular anymore and is less offered. V. bracteata is a wintergrower and is quite easy to grow. With other wintergowing genera the temperature can be a point of attention: most plants prefer a rather 'low' growing temperature, about 10-15 oC. When you retain the gift of water the leaves of the plant will die off at the beginning of the dormant period. It is also possible to grow the plant as an evergreen and to continue the watering.
