until a couple of years ago the genus Sprekelia was monotypical, this means that there is only one species known, in this case S. formosissima. In Herbertia volume 54 (1999) David Lehmiller has published the article 'A New Species of Sprekelia (Ammryllidaceae)'. In this article he describes Sprekelia howardii. As S. formosissima this new species grows in Mexico. When you compare the plants of the two species, you could say that S. howardii is a miniture S. formosissima
