Before the revision of the genus Haemanthus this species was known as H. magnificus. When looking at the inflorescence of S. puniceus you see the similarity with Haemanthus species. The bracts of S. puniceus are rather large and envelop the flowers and they don't die off and the perianth segments are very small. This plant is don't difficult to grow, but it grows slowly.
