It's almost new years eve. Next week will be the first week of the new year 2008. Before I look ahead, I want to look back at what 2007 has brought. Well, I think I can be satisfied. Various plants have flowered last year, some of them for the first time, like Haemanthus humulis, Cryptostephanus vansonii, Chasmanthe aethiopica (it is now in flower!), Ornithogalum oreoides and Arisaema nepenthoides. I'm very curious what 2008 will bring, I have sown and planted a lot of old and new things outside and in the unheated greenhouse. When I checked the potted specialty bulbs in the greenhouse a couple of days ago, I saw that plants of Colchicum soboliferum had started to grow. Between the still folded leaves I saw the white tips of flower buds. This Colchicum flowers in spring with white to pinkish flowers. The corms form stolones. When you leave the plants undisturbed for several years, you will see the plant spread itself.
The first specialty bulb flowers in 2008: Colchicum soboliferum. This Colchicum flowers in late winter - spring with white to pinkish flowers. The corms form stolones. When you leave the plants undisturbed for several years, you will see the plant spread itself. I grow this plant in a plastic pot in a plastic greenhouse. The next specialty bulb that will flower, is Ornithogalum sintenissii. The first buds start to open and show the first white tips of the perianth segments. All we have to do is to wait for a couple of sunny days, the plants will flower then.
Although it's only the end of February, it's almost spring. The flowerbulbs in the garden have started to grow and are now visible above the surface of the soil. In the greenhouse the plants are a couple of weeks ahead. Tulipa biflora is flowering in the greenhouse. Various Ornithogalum species were in bud last week. I have taken the pots insie, then daily the sun on the plants and now they are in full flower. Inside various Clivia hybrids and species are in bud or in flower.
